ALL ABOUT US
Find out more about East Stoke WI
With a membership of sixteen, we may be small compared to some W.I.'s, but we have a lovely mix of ladies, both in ages and backgrounds. The common denominator is that we have all become good friends, and we always have fun. A few ladies are farmers' wives, East Stoke being a historical farming village. Some members are still working, some have retired, but everyone has something to offer in one way or another.
Leslie got to know us because she came to give us a lecture on her breathtaking patchwork skills. She liked us so much, she joined as a member! She has since organised a couple of craft sessions in our hall on a Saturday morning. We made lovely bags (see the pic in Gallery) and later some unique crafted Christmas decorations. Leslie also introduced her friend, Jeanette, who is great with floral arranging, so we recruited two new members.
Janice is a keen photographer and we have had a photograph in the Nottinghamshire Federation Calendar five years running! It's good to see our little group on the county map so to speak.
East Stoke W.I. was founded in November 1933, with the meetings taking place in The Reading Room in East Stoke. Our present hall was erected in 1937 Every November we celebrate our birthday by going out for dinner at a chosen venue. There were around 29 members in those early days. Changing times saw our numbers fall over the years, but we are glad to say that over the last few years, we have had several new members join and our group goes from strength to strength, under the presidency of Valerie Pope, whose enthusiasm and generosity is an inspiration to us all.
Our programme is varied and interesting, with lectures, craft sessions, walking groups, sporting activities and social groups etc. There is always something to enjoy - and learn.
If you would like more details, please contact us by email - go to Contacts page and click the email form. Valerie or Christine, our secretary, will be happy to have a chat with you. If you decide to come along and give us a look, you are assured of a warm welcome.
